Matcha overnight oats — a delicious and healthy way to jumpstart your day. The unique taste of matcha is complemented perfectly by white chocolate chips for a breakfast treat that you can prep ahead and grab as you go.
(Love overnight oats? Make some white chocolate raspberry overnight oats and chocolate overnight oats with peanut butter too!)

Overnight oats are oats that you soak in milk overnight instead of cooking on the stove.
They’re usually stored in mason jars or other individual-sized containers.
They’ve gained popularity in recent years because they’re so convenient, especially on busy mornings. Plus, you can customize them in a million and one ways!
These matcha overnight oats are our favorite overnight oats recipe.
The earthy flavor of matcha powder is balanced by the sweetness of honey or maple syrup.
Sprinkle in white chocolate chips and you have yourself breakfast you can look forward to eating everyday.
Why you’ll love making this matcha overnight oats recipe

We eat matcha overnight oats regularly and never get tired of them. Plus, they keep us full until lunch!
- Easy to make. Prep is done in just a few minutes. Then you just chill and enjoy the next day.
- Make-ahead. You can make them 3-5 days ahead of when you plan on consuming them. Perfect for meal prepping. (If you want to learn more about meal prepping, check out this meal prep manual.)
- Gentle boost without the crash. Matcha contains caffeine so it does give you a nice boost however, unlike coffee, you won’t experience the infamous caffeine crash. Just gentle and sustained energy (source).
- Customizable. Add as many or as little toppings as you like. We usually add goji berries, dried cranberries and more white chocolate chips.
How to make

Matcha overnight oats are so easy to make! You can find the full ingredient list in the recipe card at the bottom of this page.
Ingredients
A few things to note:
- Rolled oats — I usually use rolled oats in this recipe. Sprouted oats and old-fashioned oats will work too. I don’t recommend using instant oats because they tend to get too mushy nor steel cut oats because they won’t absorb the liquid as much.
- Matcha — make sure to buy matcha powder that you enjoy drinking. See FAQs for more info.
- Yogurt — for best results, use plain Greek yogurt. You can also use high protein plain yogurt for added nutrition. Stay away from flavored ones though.
- Milk — we usually use almond milk, but any kind of milk will work.
- Chia seeds — helps in making your mixture thick and creamy.
- White chocolate chips — you can also use white chocolate chunks. Take your favorite white chocolate bar and roughly chop.
- Sweetener — honey and maple syrup are our sweetener of choice. You can substitute with whatever you like.
Tools
You don’t need anything special to make this recipe. Just a bowl and containers to store the oats in. We prefer individual mason jars but you can really use any container you like.
Step-by-step photos

In a large bowl, stir rolled oats, chia seeds, white chocolate chips and a pinch of salt until combined.

Transfer into individual containers and chill overnight. They will be ready to eat the next morning. Optional: top with dried fruit, nuts or more chocolate!
Expert tips

Easy, right? Here are tips for perfect overnight matcha oats every time.
- Use the right kind of oats. When making overnight oats, it’s important to use the right kind of oats i.e.rolled oats, sprouted oats or old-fashioned oats. Avoid instant or quick cooking oats because they tend to get too mushy, and steel cut oats because they won’t absorb the liquid.
- Sift and whisk the matcha. If you just dump the matcha powder into the milk, it will lump together and be more challenging to incorporate. Sifting the matcha powder makes this step more manageable. And whisking the mixture thoroughly ensures you don’t have clumps of matcha later.
- Adjust the consistency to your liking. Once you’ve mixed all ingredients together, you can already tell if the oats are the consistency you want. If you want them runnier, add a little bit more milk. If you want them firmer, add a little bit more oats. Just remember that chia seeds absorb liquid as they soak.
- Allow enough time for the oats to set. For best results, chill the mixture in the fridge overnight. This also helps the chia seeds absorb the liquid for a chunkier and creamier consistency.
- Add your favorite toppings. Be as creative as you like! Add berries, chopped nuts, coconut, and more. Just remember to add these before consuming and not to the mixture itself so they retain their texture.
Recipe FAQs

I recommend using rolled oats or old-fashioned oats. They will result to the perfect texture and consistency.
Avoid using instant or quick cooking oats because they tend to get too mushy.
Also avoid using steel cut oats because they won’t absorb the liquid as much.
There are two kinds of matcha powder — culinary grade and ceremonial grade.
Ceremonial grade matcha is more expensive, very fine and silky, and has a vibrant green color. It’s designed to be naturally sweet and strong and is usually the kind used in Japanese tea ceremonies.
Not very many people appreciate the strong matcha flavor though. It’s definitely an acquired taste.
Culinary grade matcha is a more versatile powder that’s more commonly used to make lattes and baked goods. This is the matcha flavor we’re probably more used to.
I used to think that I needed to splurge for the ceremonial matcha powder but after many recipes and years of baking, I realized that for the recipe that I make, culinary grade works just as well.
So don’t worry about it. Just make sure the matcha powder you use for baking is the matcha powder you enjoy drinking.
I would recommend buying pure matcha powder though, and not those already sweetened with sugar.
I personally like Elan Organic Matcha Powder which I can usually get at Costco for a steal.
Overnights oats are usually eaten cold, straight from the fridge. But you can absolutely warm it up and enjoy.
They last about a week. So you can make a batch on a Sunday and have a grab-and-go breakfast option for the rest of your work week.

Notes
- You can use dairy milk or any kind of unsweetened milk instead of almond milk. You can also use maple syrup or agave instead of honey.
- The number of servings largely depends on the size of your individual containers. We use 250-ml/8-oz mason jars and get 5 jars that are about ¾ full out of this recipe.
- Alternatively, you can opt to refrigerate the whole batch of oats and just scoop what you need into a bowl. Just make sure to store the oats in an airtight container and return to the fridge.

My oldest son has oatmeal almost every day for breakfast. I haven’t tried overnight oats with him, but I should. Then I could make breakfast for the entire week at once. The only thing here I don’t have is the matcha powder, so I’ll have to pick that up for him to try!
