Matcha Overnight Oats with Chia Seeds

If you’re wondering what overnight oats are, they’re simply oats that you soak in milk overnight instead of cooking on the stove. They’re usually stored in mason jars or similar individual-sized containers.

They’ve gained popularity in recent years because they’re so convenient, especially on busy mornings. Plus, you can customize them in a million and one ways!

These matcha overnight oats are our favourite overnight oats recipe.

The earthy flavour of matcha powder is balanced by the sweetness of honey or maple syrup. Sprinkle in white chocolate chips and you have yourself breakfast you can look forward to everyday.

How to make matcha overnight oats

Matcha Overnight Oats with Chia and White Chocolate Chips

We eat matcha overnight oats regularly and never get tired of them. Plus, they’re so easy to make.

Just mix all ingredients in a bowl, transfer to individual containers then chill.

The next morning, top it with things like goji berries, dried blueberries, almonds, coconut, fresh fruit and yes, chocolate chips!

It’s so good and it keeps us full until lunch.

    Ingredients

This recipe is fully customizable so each serving is the perfect one for you. The base ingredients you’ll need are:

    • Unsweetened almond milk (or any milk you like)
    • Matcha powder (make sure to buy high quality matcha powder)
    • Rolled oats (or old-fashioned oats)
    • Chia seeds
    • White chocolate chips
    • Salt
    • Greek yogurt
    • Vanilla extract
    • Honey or maple syrup

    Plus all your favourite toppings!

    Expert tips

Matcha Overnight Oats with Chia and White Chocolate Chips

It’s super easy to make matcha oatmeal but there are still a few things to keep in mind when making them:

    1. BUY GOOD MATCHA POWDER.  Make sure to buy high-quality matcha powder. They would sometimes be labelled as ceremonial grade or culinary grade. When it comes to green tea, you can really tell the difference, especially when making recipes like this and other desserts like matcha ice cream, matcha chocolate chip cookies or matcha brownies. I’m very practical but this is one of the ingredients I usually spring for. Here’s a great guide.

    2. USE THE RIGHT OATS. When making overnight oats, make sure to use rolled oats or old-fashioned oats. Instant oatmeal will be too mushy for this recipe.

    3. GET CREATIVE! Don’t be afraid to experiment with your matcha overnight oats. Add your favourite things, mix in your favourite flavours. Every jar can be jazzed up differently.

    4. MAKE AHEAD. Oatmeal in jars is an excellent way to save time in the morning. You can make a big batch and don’t need to worry about breakfast for the next few days. Remember to only make a batch that you can consume within the week though. For good measure, we like to consume ours within 3-4 days.

    Equipment

    • Mixing Bowls
    • Balloon Whisk
    • Measuring Cups

    Ingredients

    • 1 ½ cup unsweetened almond milk see note
    • 1 tsp matcha powder see note
    • 1 ½ cup rolled oats (or old-fashioned oats)
    • 1 tbsp chia seeds
    • ½ cup white chocolate chips
    • pinch salt
    • ½ cup Greek yogurt
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • honey or maple syrup to taste
    • your favourite toppings optional

    Instructions

    • In a medium bowl, whisk 1 ½ cup almond milk and 1 tsp matcha powder until the matcha is dissolved. Set aside.
    • In a large bowl, stir 1 ½ cup rolled oats, 1 tbsp chia seeds, ½ cup white chocolate chips and a pinch of salt until combined. Stir in ½ cup Greek yogurt, 1 tsp vanilla extract and honey until fully incorporated.
    • Transfer into individual containers (see note) and chill overnight. They will be ready to eat the next morning. Optional: top with dried fruit, nuts or more chocolate!

    Notes

    1. You can use dairy milk or any kind of unsweetened milk instead of almond milk. You can also use maple syrup or agave instead of honey.
    2. The number of servings largely depends on the size of your individual containers. We use 250-ml/8-oz mason jars and get 5 jars that are about ¾ full out of this recipe.
    3. Alternatively, you can opt to refrigerate the whole batch of oats and just scoop what you need into a bowl. Just make sure to store the oats in an airtight container and return to the fridge.

Now I’m almost drooling, looking at some of these pictures. I didn’t know you could add matcha to foods like this. I have had matcha green tea, though.

I happen to love white chocolate chips. When breakfast is more like dessert, makes it more fun to eat. We just had some overnight oats this morning. If breakfast is waiting for me…the more chance I will eat it. I also love matcha….so this is a winner for sure.

I don’t really like oats lately although I used to have them for breakfast. But this contains chocolate and I think I have to try it!

That looks delicious even though I prefer hot breakfast oats to cold. I enjoyed watching your video of it too.

My oldest son has oatmeal almost every day for breakfast. I haven’t tried overnight oats with him, but I should. Then I could make breakfast for the entire week at once. The only thing here I don’t have is the matcha powder, so I’ll have to pick that up for him to try!
