    Avocado Milkshake

How do you like your avocados?

It’s common to enjoy avocados as a sweet treat in Southeast Asian countries like Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.

However, I notice that people here in Canada mainly use avocado as an ingredient in savory dishes like avocado toast, guacamole or to add to dishes like huevos rancheros.

It’s used in baking too but typically to add moisture and not for the flavor.

Growing up in the Philippines, I ate avocados like a mango or a kiwi — just slice and scoop out the flesh.

Sometimes I dip them in sugar like strawberries. I also enjoy avocado with milk i.e. I dunk them in cold milk like Oreos.

We also grew up drinking avocado shake. Not a smoothie with kale or other greens. Just avocado, milk and ice cream.

And though I won’t ever call this an after work-out drink or a breakfast smoothie or a healthy drink, I mean, feel free. It has fruit!

And it is refreshing, rich and thick, dessert-like and delicious.

    Give it a try.

Why you’ll love avocado as a sweet drink

    Avocado shake Filipino style.

You thought you like avocados? Try avocado milkshake and you’ll love it.

    • Rich and creamy. It’s avocado ice cream you can slurp.
    • Easy to make. Just blend everything and enjoy.
    • Unique taste. You haven’t had avocado like this before. It’s delightfully tropical and delicious.

    How to make avocado milkshake

Ingredients for avocado shake with text overlay.

It’s so easy to make Filipino avocado shake.

    Ingredients

You only need 5 ingredients, including ice cubes! A few things to note:

    • Avocados — make sure they are ripe and not too veiny or stringy.
    • Milk — you can use any kind of milk you like (almond milk, soy milk), though I prefer using evaporated milk or whole milk for the creamiest texture.
    • Sweetened condensed milk — this is what we use to sweeten our drink but you can also use sugar, honey or maple syrup.
    • Vanilla ice cream — because, milk shake.

    Tools

    You’ll need a blender, that’s it.

    Expert tips

It’s the easiest thing, isn’t it? A few things to remember for the best Filipino avocado milkshake.

    • Use ripe avocados. They’re the star of the show so make sure they’re ripe and ready (see FAQs).
    • Use whole milk. May not be the best for calories but the best if you want the richest, creamiest milkshake.
    • Adjust the sweetness to taste. Add condensed milk a little a time until you get the sweetness you like.
    • Adjust to get the consistency you want. If you need to make your milkshake richer, add more avocados. If you want it thinner, add more ice or milk.

    Recipe FAQs

How do I know if an avocado is ripe?

There are several ways to check if an avocado is ripe:

    – Its skin should look dark green or almost black.
    – Give it a gentle squeeze; it should feel slightly soft but not overly so or mushy.
    – Remove the stem; if it’s hard to remove it’s not ready. If you can easily remove it and the skin underneath is green, it’s ripe.

What are the variations I can make to this recipe?

There are so many ways to make this recipe your own.

    – Add dried fruit like dates to sweeten the drink.
    – Add other fruits like bananas, strawberries or mangoes.
    – Add protein powder to make it a legit after work out drink.
    – Sprinkle some spices like cinnamon for added flavor.

You can even transfer the mixture into popsicle moulds for some paletas de aguacate or Mexican avocado ice pops.

    Can I use frozen avocado?

Yes, you can use frozen avocados. And if you do, you can skip some of the ice cubes for a creamier drink!

How long does avocado milkshake last?

Avocado milkshake is best enjoyed immediately.

Leftovers can be stored covered in the fridge but know that avocado oxidizes and your milkshake will turn a shade of brown the longer it sits. Best to drink it within 1 day.

I love avocado milkshake. Had it first time in southern India. Very similar except icecream! Love this and it has condensed milk which is my favorite ingredient to use. And eat leftover by spoonfuls!

Do you know that years ago I did not like avocado? I remember hubby (then boyfriend) making me guac and I really didn’t like it…like, at all.

Nowadays, I absolutely LOVE avocado!! I regularly have avocado in the fridge and can practically eat it like an apple it’s that good. Mostly, though, it’s on bread with chili flakes or a burger or sandwich. We’ve even just had it sliced and as a little extra side with dinner.

I’ve never had avocado ice cream or in a milkshake like this, but I bet it is absolutely AWESOME, especially with the condensed milk and ice-cream. I can just imagine how creamy it must be. Love this, Jolina! Yum!

      Have a great week, girl!

Really? The strangest thing I’ve heard about avocado is my co-worker being deathly allergic to it. When we go out for sushi she would get a really nasty rash just being around sushi with avocado in it! Ah well, glad we can enjoy it 🙂 Hope you’re having a lovely week Dawn!
